Product photography should be able to communicate the texture, features, and use of your product without a sales person present. Here are 3 tips to improve your product photography without hiring a photographer.

  1. Shoot a variety of images: Great product photography should consist of images of the product being used or worn, styled for a product listing (like a flat lay or Amazon listing image), and a close up to capture detail like fabric patterns, buttons, etc.
  2. Shoot in natural light: Finding great light for photography is so important. The easiest and prettiest light to use is natural light. When shooting, face your products or models towards a window to allow natural light to illuminate the image. If you’re shooting in the morning, find an East facing window, if shooting in the afternoon, find a West facing window.
  3. Use the grid on your phone and follow the rule of thirds: The rule of thirds is a composition rule within photography. The idea is that you image 2 horizontal lines on your image and two vertical lines and then place your subject along the intersects or the center of all of those lines. Apple and Samsung phones offer a grid that you can turn on and see while shooting on your phone and it makes a huge difference while shooting.
